#Chapter 5: THE GREATEST EXPERIMENT WAS A LIFE

In 2006, Essiet reached formal university retirement age, but was encouraged to remain as contract staff.

During this later season, he married his present wife, Glory.

In 2014, he finally stepped away from formal employment, lived in Port Harcourt for three years, and in 2017 returned to Eket—the place where his remarkable journey had begun.

What a journey.

From Iko Eket to Cameroon.

From Cameroon to Arochukwu.

From Lagos to Port Harcourt.

From Zaria to America.

From Zaria to Minna. From Minna to Port-Harcourt.

And finally...

home.

But how do you measure eighty years?

By degrees?

Jobs?

Universities?

Experiments?

Four engineering daughters?

The young people mentored?

Or the thirty-plus years that medicine never expected?

Perhaps Daddy's greatest accomplishment cannot be placed on a résumé.

It is found in people.

People who learned to work because they watched him work.

People who learned to question because he encouraged them to think.

People who dreamed bigger because he believed they could.

Children who learned that excellence and faith belong together.

And a family that learned that above education, achievement, intelligence and success stands something infinitely greater:

Jesus Christ.

Because behind the opportunities was God's providence.

Behind the difficult years was God's strength.

Behind the accomplishments were God's gifts.

Behind the miracle was God's grace.

And behind eighty extraordinary years stands a faithful God.

So perhaps in spite of human weakness, failings and trials all along the path, Daddy's story is not ultimately:

“Look what one remarkable man accomplished.”

It is:

“LOOK WHAT GOD CAN DO WITH A LIFE PLACED IN HIS HANDS.”

Happy 80th Birthday, Daddy.

May your familiar question continue echoing through generations:

“What's your plan for today?”

And may our answer be:

To know Christ. To work faithfully. To think deeply. To serve humanity. To use our gifts well. And to leave the world better than we found it.
